Guest galaxykid Posted March 24, 2006 Report Posted March 24, 2006 From your vehicle details I take it you have a Mk1  if so the switches are held in place in the door by a trim plate that clips into the door card, you need to push the plate towards the door hinges and then lift it out from the rear  it slides up enough to allow the retaining pip on the plate to release and alow you to lift it clear of the door card, you may need to aid its release with the use of a small screw driver used as a prise bar  most common cause of electrical faults in the doors seem to the wires in the rubber gaiters failing due to stress hardening  I have replaced three of the door looms so far and repaired the tailgate loom twice  Quote
Guest topcarp2 Posted March 24, 2006 Report Posted March 24, 2006 thanks galaxykid..is the wiring in the rubber gaitors easy to get at and inspect for damage?..ive had a problem with the drivers side window for a while now it started off with the window seeming to lose its one touch wind up/down facility and now they dont work at all..i have tried to push the trim plate towards the door hinges but it wont budge and to be honest im a bit heavy handed and was in fear of breaking it if i pushed any harder...i want to try lookin inside the gaitors but dont want to break them in the process.... Guest jimq842 Posted April 19, 2006 Report Posted April 19, 2006 I have the exact same problem. Drivers window will not go up or down and passenger window will go down only from drivers switches. Ok from passenger switch up and down. Had a look at the wiring diagram in the haynes manual and suspect drivers side motor as switch unit tests ok. Probably need to get an auto electrician to look at it but, this seems to be a common fault. Anybody any ideas ? Quote
Bigjeeze Posted April 19, 2006 Report Posted April 19, 2006 As the man says check the wiring in the gaitors. It's a common problem. Quote
broom broom Posted April 19, 2006 Report Posted April 19, 2006 I had the same problem with the drivers window not going up or down I know i need a new wiring loom :o and as far as i know the fraud dealers are the only ones to sell em at a cost of Quote
NikpV Posted April 19, 2006 Report Posted April 19, 2006 probably only a few wires - worth trying to splice in new section of wire using crimps Quote
redneck01246 Posted April 19, 2006 Report Posted April 19, 2006 ive had same probs on mark1 and then on mark2-mark1 turned out to be furred contacts on control unit(silkolene contact cleaner sorted it)mark2 had to have a new door loom Quote
Big Jim's Lad Posted April 20, 2006 Report Posted April 20, 2006 I had this same problem on my MK1 too. Does your switch have a nice positive click when you press it or is it a bit non descript?. My switch was worn and the spring contacts inside had come off their mounting points. As I am a bit tight I just soldered the spring contacts back in place rather than buy a new switch! It is quite easy to open the switch once you have it in your hand, just a small screwdriver to prise open the plastic lugs. :D Hope you can sort it cheaply!! Quote
galic Posted April 26, 2006 Report Posted April 26, 2006 I have had exactly the same problem as described as topcarp2, I wish I had looked here first as I assumed it was the switch and went out and bought a new one for Quote
NREV Posted April 3, 2007 Report Posted April 3, 2007 hi my mk1 galaxy is the same the drivers side window will not go up or down with the switch or with the key held in the locked position also the drivers side switch will only operate the passenger window in the down position, the passenger window switch works fine, any ideas, also when i started up last nite i heard a pop sound coming from around the fusebox/ drivers door area , i thort the fuse had popped but checked it and its ok,any help appreciated Quote
arryp0tter Posted April 7, 2007 Report Posted April 7, 2007 i have a 96 galaxy 2 ltr petrol and had same problem but with a diff solution . please dont hold me responsible if it dont work try this remove the offending switch and carefully seperate the contacts from the switch body its very simple then contact plate sin the switch are simply slid over the plastic post lift each contact off and clean the face of each contact and hey presto it could just work. ok no guarantees but its easier to try than 90 oddo qid from the fraud for a door loom. chippy63 Posted April 16, 2007 Report Posted April 16, 2007 I had the same problem (amongst others--long story!!). In the wiring loom in the passenger door sill all the Red/Yellow wires are commoned together, due to the rear washer pipe problem all the wires had got corroded. Solution strip wires , resolder together and tape up firmly with Insulating tape. BINGO, electric windows work, central locking works, global closing works. Quote
